Distance Image Sensor Market: Introduction
- Sensors are devices used to detect and respond to certain types of input from the physical environment. The specific input are light, heat, motion, moisture, and pressure. The output is a signal that is converted to the location of the sensor on a human-readable screen for further reading or processing.
- An image sensor is a device that converts an optical image into an electronic signal. It is utilized in digital cameras to convert the light received on the camera lens into a digital image. Typically, when light affects the lens of a camera, the image sensor captures that light, converts it into an electronic signal and subsequently transmits it to the camera processor, which transforms the electronic signal into a digital image. Image sensor are of two types:
- Charged coupled device (CCD)
- Complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS)
- Distance image sensor measure the distance to the target object using ToF (time of flight method)
- The Time-of-Flight (ToF) principle is a method used to measure the distance between a sensor and an object, based on the time difference between the discharge of a signal and its return to the sensor, after being reflected by an object. Various types of signals can be used with the ToF principle; the most common being sound and light. For instance, the TeraRanger sensor uses light as a carrier because of its higher speed, longer range, lower weight, and safety for the eyes.
- Indirect and direct ToF, both, have their own advantages. Both can simultaneously measure intensity and distance for every pixel in a scene.
- Direct ToF sensors transmit short vibration of light for only for few nanoseconds and subsequently, measure the time it takes for some of the emitted light to return
- Indirect ToF sensors transmit continuous, modulated light and measure the phase of the reflected light to calculate the distance of the object
Rise in Demand for Distance Image Sensor in Automotive Industry
- Increase in demand for distance image sensor is fueling the market, as it offers technical advantages in terms of high reliability and non-edge exclusion. Moreover, ToF (time of flight) distance image sensors are preferred by consumers due to their preference in various tools over other 3D imaging technologies.
- ToF distance image sensors offer numerous advantages as compared to other 3D imaging technologies
- They are also utilized for eye-safety purposes. ToF sensors can use a low-power infrared laser diode, or LED, as a light source and drive it by a modulated pulse, therefore no need to worry about harming the eyes
- ToF sensors require much less calculation, as they consume less power and process less data than other 3D imaging technologies, such as stereoscopic imaging and structured light
- In terms of end-use industry, the information and communication technology is expected to be a highly prominent segment of the market during the forecast period
- Apart from automotive, demand for distance image sensor is rising significantly due to extensive integration of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) technologies in vehicles
