Manual resuscitators, pediatric resuscitators, self-inflating resuscitators, and gas-powered resuscitators are the several types of resuscitators. Pediatric resuscitators have a pop-off valve, which allows pressure to escape when it exceeds a certain threshold. This protects the child's lungs from harm. Adult resuscitators do not come with a pop-off valve. Self-inflating resuscitators feature an oxygen intake valve that takes oxygen from a tank and an air inlet valve that replenishes the bag. A person must compress the bag to start breathing.

Gas-powered resuscitators are linked to a standard 15 mm and 22 mm breathing circuit and endotracheal tubes. These resuscitators are powered by a 50 psi oxygen supply. They can provide 100% oxygen and require minimal effort to ventilate the patient. Thus, gas-powered resuscitators are preferred over manual resuscitators. Gas-powered resuscitators should only be used on adults and not on infants or young children.
