Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a treatment that involves special drugs termed as photosensitizing agents. Photosensitizing agents are used along with light to destroy the cancer cells present inside a patient’s body. A light-activated drug is often referred to as a photosensitizer. The drugs injected or induced into the body can only be activated with the help of a special type of light. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is also known as phototherapy, photochemotherapy, or photoradiation therapy. The part of the body to be treated determines the route of administration of photosensitizers i.e. whether they should be injected through the blood stream or be applied onto the skin surface. Over a period of time, the drug gets absorbed by the cancerous cells. The light catalyzes the reaction. The light of a particular wavelength is allowed to fall onto the affected area, which causes the drug to react with oxygen in the cells. It forms a chemical compound that destroys the cancerous cells. Photodynamic therapy has also been used to annihilate the blood supply from the blood vessels, which nourishes the cancerous cells. The drug administered and the light allowed to fall onto the affected area are concerned with a particular time span which can be termed as drug-to-light interval. The time may vary from a couple of hours to a couple of days and further, to weeks, completely depending on the drug used for the treatment.
