Global Sperm Count Test Kit Market: Introduction

Sperm count test kit is presently being used frequently by men, which was not the scenario earlier, as it was only women who were being tested and evaluated for fertility. Sperm count test, or semen analysis, is carried out in order to analyze the health and viability of a man’s sperm. The test analysis is carried out by collecting a sample of semen. Semen is the fluid that contains sperm, which comprises protein and sugar substances that are released during male ejaculation. Sperm count analysis is generally recommended to couples who have difficulty in conceiving. Sperm count test kit helps analyze or determine low sperm count or any sperm abnormality. However, certain factors may affect the test negatively; these could be semen coming in contact with spermicide, test conducted during illness, or bad handling or contamination of the sample. Sperm count test kit provides the number of sperms in the sample, which should be around 70 to 80 million sperms/ml. However, it is always not necessary that men with low sperm count are not fertile; low sperm count could also be due to other issues in the body. The primary application of a sperm test kit is to observe the motility and morphology of the sperm. Sperm motility is the movement of sperm from cervix to the egg through the fallopian tube; the normal motility of a sperm is estimated at around 50% of the total sample. In morphology, the structure of the sperm is observed, if the morphology is not correct it may be an indication of exposure to chemicals or toxins due to other medical conditions. Once the sperm count test is finished, the results are analyzed and combined with the individual’s medical history by an expert who then suggests treatment. The global sperm test kit market can be segmented based on application type, end-user, and region. Based on application type, the market can be classified into sperm motility, sperm count, infection detection, and others. In terms of end-user, the global sperm count test kit market can be divided into hospitals, diagnostic centers, home care, and others.

Key Drivers of Global Sperm Count Test Kit Market

Prevalence of fertility disorders

According to Human Reproduction (Oxford, England), the prevalence of infertility was 12.5% (CI 95% 11.7–13.3) among women and 10.1% (CI 95% 9.2–11.1) among men. Increased prevalence was associated with later cohabitation with a partner, higher socio-economic status and, for those who had a child, becoming parents at older ages. According to WHO-World Health Organization, between 48 million couples and 186 million individuals are estimated to live with infertility globally. In the male reproductive system, infertility is most commonly caused by issues in the ejection of semen, absence or low levels of sperm, or abnormal shape (morphology) and movement (motility) of the sperm. A WHO study, published at the end of 2012, indicated that the overall burden of infertility in women from 190 countries has remained similar in estimated levels and trends from 1990 to 2010.

Rise in awareness regarding male infertility

According to Weill Cornell Medicine, in at least half of all cases of infertility, a male factor is a major or contributing cause. This means that about 10% of all men in the U.S. who are attempting to conceive suffer from infertility. The most common identifiable cause of infertility in men is varicocele. This is a condition of enlarged veins in the scrotum that causes abnormalities in the temperature regulation of the testis. Male infertility is more common in environments with high levels of environmental pollution, including water contaminants, pesticides, and herbicides. According to Department of Health, State Government of Victoria, Australia, around 30% of fertility issues originate in the man. Treatment options for poor sperm quality include inseminating the man’s partner with a concentrated sample of the man’s semen and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).
