Light-activated Therapies Market: Introduction
Light-activated therapy is also called as photo therapy, photodynamic therapy (PDT), photo radiation therapy, or chemotherapy. In this, special photosensitizing agents are used. Numerous advantages and disadvantages are associated with light-activated therapy.
It is less invasive than surgery, can be targeted very precisely, carries no long-term side effects, can be repeated at the same site several times are some of the advantages. Disadvantages include it cannot be used to treat cancers which are largely spread. PDT cannot be used on people with some blood-related diseases. Several types of diseases can be treated with the help of light-activated therapies such as acne; psoriasis; warts, which are caused by viruses; and skin cancers such as actinic keratosis & some other types of cancers. PDT’s biological effects may be least partially localised to the tumour, which might result in a higher concentration of the photosensitizers within the tumour in comparison to healthy cells.
The most common photosensitizers used are Riboflavin, Hypericin, Chlorin E6, Indocyanine green (ICG), and Curcumin.
Types of photodynamic therapies include chemiluminescence-mediated photodynamic therapy, Cerenkov radiation-induced photodynamic therapy, and bioluminescence-mediated photodynamic therapy.
- Chemiluminescence-mediated photodynamic therapy - In this therapy, special types of chemicals are used. They have varied applications such as bio imaging and chemo sensing & therapy. The most commonly used systems are luminol - H2O2 and oxalate - H2O2 ester.
- Bioluminescence-mediated photodynamic therapy - It is considered as a special type of CL, which involves the enzymatic oxidation of small molecule substrates, such as firefly luciferin and Renilla luciferase-coelenterazine systems.
- Cerenkov radiation-induced photodynamic therapy - This is an interaction between high speed charged particles with a surrounding medium
There are several PDT modalities such as superficial PDT, interstitial PDT, and deep PDT
- Superficial PDT: It comprises skin treatments with a low light penetration depth. It is also called as external PDT.
- Interstitial PDT: This can treat tumors beyond 1 cm supported by the use of needles, catheters and optical fibres, but utilizing conventional light sources, with its light penetration limits correspondingly as superficial PDT.
- Deep PDT: It includes an extensive variety of technologies which aims at a deeper penetration beyond what is attained by conventional light sources. This section possesses NIR radiation of up conversion materials with advanced photosensitizers excited with novel nonlinear optical techniques, ionizing radiation, self-illuminated compounds, and emerging implants.
