Cellulose acetate butyrate is a thermoplastic ester with high content of butyryl. It offers various characteristics such as low viscosity, intercoating adhesive ability, high transparency and surface gloss. Also, these act as barrier to moisture and ultraviolet light. These can also be used with various resin systems such as acrylics, polyesters, phenolics, and isocyanates. Furthermore, these are not used with melamine, urea-formaldehyde and many alkyds due to less content of butyryl then above mentioned products general. With the addition of cellulose acetate butyrate into coating formulations, they improve properties of coatings such as hardness, leveling, resistance to solvent, clarity and gloss. These also reduces the drying time of the coatings. Due to these properties, these are mainly used in coating of metals and wood co, gravure and flexographic printing inks, graphic arts, ink jet printing inks, nail lacquer topcoats, automotive clear and base coats.
