Beer Market - Latin America and Middle-East Industry Analysis, Size, Share, Growth, Trends and Forecast 2015 - 2021

Beer is the third most popular drink after tea and water and is consumed widely. It is categorized into four segments dark, lager, non-alcoholic and stout beer. It is produced by the saccharification of starch and fermentation of sugar. Most of the beers are flavored with hops, which add bitterness to it. Apart from this, other flavorings such as herbs or fruit are also added occasionally. The process of preparing beer is called ‘brewing. The main ingredients in preparation of beer are water, brewer’s yeasts, malted barley, wheat and hops used for adding flavor. Starch sources such as malted barley and flavorings such as hops are used for beer processing. Some of the most common types of beers consumed today are standard beer, low alcoholic beer, premium lager, crafted beer, and specialty beer.

Increasing health awareness among the consumers is the main factor driving this market. Increasing obesity, high cholesterol, and rise in coronary heart diseases are some of the major areas of concern, globally. According to World Health Organization (WHO) 2013 statistics, approximately 64.9% of the people in Latin America were obese. Moreover, WHO 2010 statistics, states the risk of obesity and cardiovascular diseases to be high in the Middle East and 55.6% of population in the region being obese, as of 2010. Consumption of beer has proved to be beneficial for people to prevent such coronary diseases. Beer is low in cholesterol, and fat content, which help in preventing high cholesterol diseases. Other driving factors include rapid urbanization, rise in disposable income of the consumers. The disposable income of people in Latin America and Middle-East region increased tremendously in 2013 compared to 2012. The increasing disposable income contributes to the increase in purchasing power of the consumer thus fuelling the consumption of beer. Low fat and cholesterol content in beer are also expected to boost its demand in the Latin America and Middle-East. Moreover, changing consumer lifestyle is also escalating the demand for beer, especially among the youth. Also rapid urbanization is boosting the demand of beer in Latin America and Middle-East. Beer is the second largest product consumed after water globally. Consumption of beer at a moderate rate is helpful for health conscious people. However, bitter taste of beer is one of the restraining factors for the growth of beer market.

The beer market in this report has been segmented geographically into two regions Latin America and Middle-East. Lager has the largest product segment in Latin America with market share of 99.43% in 2014 and 79.01% in Middle-East. However, lager segment is expected to be the growing market in Latin America and Middle-East growing at a CAGR of 3.1% and 1.3% from 2015 to 2021. Increasing disposable income owing to rapid urbanization is one of the major factors fueling the demand for lager. Another most important factor escalating the demand of lager is that they are less bitter compared to dark and stout beer.

In Latin America, Brazil has the largest market for beer valued at 60.2% in 2014. Absence of stringent rules and regulations in this region and suitable climatic condition are the major factor fuelling the demand in the beer market. Moreover, owing to increasing health awareness the beer market in Latin America is expected to remain the market leader throughout the forecast period. Further, Middle-East is the growing market for beer especially non-alcoholic beers. In Middle-East, UAE and Egypt held highest market share of 40.62% in 2014 and is expected to be the growing market for non-alcoholic beer. The consumers of Middle-East consume more of non-alcoholic beer as that of alcoholic beer. The main reason for the consumption of non-alcoholic beer is due to the presence of strict government rules and regulation that restricts consumption of alcoholic beer or drinks. These rules and regulations strictly prohibit consumption of alcoholic beer in some parts of Middle-East like Saudi Arabia among others. However, in some parts of Middle-East alcoholic beer is consumed like in UAE, Egypt among others. Moreover, in Latin America there are no such strict rules and regulations so, the demand of alcoholic beer is higher than the non-alcoholic beer. Also the climatic condition and increasing health awareness among the consumers are increasing the demand for the consumption of beer.

Major industry participants include: Carlsberg Group, Heineken N.V, SABMiller Plc., Ambev S.A and Anheuser-Busch InBev among others.
