The global automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) market is teeming with regional players giving stiff competition to the well-entrenched industry players. This makes the market highly fragmented and cutthroat. The global ANPR market includes players operating in different parts of the value chain, such as ANPR component manufacturers and ANPR software manufacturers and system integrators who engage in the production of an integrated ANPR system.
The dominant players in the ANPR market are PIPS Technology Ltd., NDI Recognition Systems, Ltd., Genetec, Inc., and Tattile Srl. Among them, PIPS Technology has maximum global outreach and Genetec Inc. is slated to up its market share by expanding its ANPR portfolio through partnerships and new product development. NDI Recognition Systems Ltd. and Tattile Srl have a stronghold in regional markets. Besides the main players, there are a large number of other players given to assembling ANPR cameras and ANPR engine (software) to form an integrated product. They are scattered across geographies and operate on a small scale.
The global ANPR market was valued at US$0.55 bn in 2015 and is anticipated to reach US$1.44 bn by 2023, growing at a CAGR of 12.8%.
Europe Dominates Market, but Asia Pacific to Grow at Maximum Pace
Depending upon application, the security and surveillance segment has held a dominant share in the market and is predicted to maintain its leading position in the years to come. In 2015, its market was worth US$0.205 bn. In the next five years, on the back of the increased uptake by both government and commercial end-use sectors, the vehicle parking and tolling applications segment is predicted to gain market share. Among the two main end users of ANPR systems, government authorities, including police, traffic department, and public parking authorities, are a major driver of demand. They utilize the system for security and surveillance and traffic management.
North America has been at the forefront of adopting automatic number plate recognition, known as automatic license plate recognition (ALPR) in the region, for retrieving stolen vehicles, asset recovery, parking enforcement, access control, and security monitoring. Its ANPR market was valued at US$0.144 bn in 2014. Europe, however, holds the dominant market share since the innovation of ANPR technology in the U.K. Strict regulations and the presence of a large number of players in the region have propelled market growth. Asia Pacific, powered by Japan, India, China, Korea, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Australia, will likely be the fastest growing market for ANPR systems.
Application in Traffic Management Drives Growth
One of the primary reasons for the increased uptake of ANPR systems is their use in traffic enforcement and management. The automatic number plate recognition technology is also being leveraged by police departments and security agencies worldwide for bringing about public safety. “ANPR systems are used by the police for three major applications, namely identification of vehicles used by the criminals, gathering intelligence, and crime investigation. Portable or fixed ANPR cameras are used to capture images of vehicles along with their license plates and to further link them to time and location of the crime,” explains the analyst of the report.
One of the main factors countering the growth of the market for ANPR is non-uniformity with respect to text pattern, design, and font size on a license plate. “ANPR cameras need to identify the differences in the number plates and must possess the capability to identify non-uniform character. Further, dust may affect the identification of characters on the plate. Developers are unable to address this issue during the development of ANPR systems,” elaborates the analyst.
