Reports
Craniosynostosis is the premature closure or one or more gaps between the growing bones of the skull. This condition may be present at birth or may be discovered shortly after birth. Craniosynostosis occurs when one or more of the sutures closes early. Treating craniosynostosis usually involves surgery to unlock the bones and reshape the skull. Craniosynostosis is estimated to affect one out of every 2500 births. Several genetic disorders, including Crouzon Syndrome and Apert Syndrome are associated with craniosynostosis. Most cases require early surgery to prevent distortion of the face and skull. The procedure lasts approximately four hours and is performed by a craniofacial plastic surgeon.
Technological advancements in medical devices
Medical technologies such as minimally-invasive surgeries, better monitoring systems, and more comfortable scanning equipment cause patients to spend less time in recovery. Adoption of technology in medical equipment and telehealth has also led to the integration of automation in surgeries, where in some cases, physicians do not even need to be present in the operating room with a patient when the surgery is performed. Consistent evolution of technology that is being applied in healthcare has led to the enactment of rules and regulations concerning its use, which enable the adoption of new methods of administering care.
Rise in minimally invasive surgery
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ annual plastic surgery procedural statistics, 17.5 million surgical and minimally invasive cosmetic procedures were performed in the U.S. in 2017, an increase of 2% over that in 2016. Statistics also reveal a rise in new trends in body-shaping procedures, with a spike in non-invasive fat reduction as well as surgeries such as breast augmentations. An estimated 1.2 million people are killed in road crashes each year, and as many as 50 million are injured, occupying 30% to 70% of orthopedic beds in hospitals in developing countries. Nearly 30 million children and adolescents participate in youth sports in the U.S.
