COVID-19 Impact on Global Diuron Market
- On January 30, 2020, the International Health Regulations Emergency Committee of the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak a public health emergency of international concern. Originating in China, the virus has spread to at least 214 countries and territories around the world.
- Several governments and private sector businesses are operating at a limited capacity or have ceased operations completely due to recent events surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic
- The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has led to disturbance in the supply chain due to the global lockdown in several countries. Also, the spread of coronavirus caused a fall in demand for chemical intermediates due to uncertainty in the global economy and capital markets. Therefore, a number of major chemical producing & consuming countries observed significant variation in demand for diuron in end-use industries such as automobiles, and aerospace & defense due to the pandemic.
Key Drivers and Restraints of Diuron Market
- Demand for diuron is expected to increase at a significant pace during the forecast period due to the rise in demand for weed control chemicals in agriculture and marine industries. Rise in cost of labor and shortage of arable lands are the major factors driving the global diuron market. Rapid growth in urbanization creates shortage of labor, due to which farmers are adopting unconventional farming practices to increase the crop yield in less crop cultivable land. Diuron helps improve agricultural productivity by eliminating unwanted herbs and weeds in the plantation. Hence, increase in demand for high agricultural productivity to meet the global food demand is primarily driving the diuron market.
- Surge in population and rise in disposable income of the people in developing regions such as Asia Pacific are also boosting the demand for herbicides, thus driving the market
- Diuron can produce acute toxicity in humans including irritation of the skin, eyes, and nose. This is expected to hamper the global diuron market.
Diuron Market: Type Segment
- Based on type, the diuron market can be divided into crystals and liquid
- The crystals segment dominates the global diuron market
- Diuron is a white crystalline solid. The crystalline form is widely used in farming.
Diuron Market: Application Segment
- In terms of application, the diuron market can be divided into temperate trees weeding, shrub fruit weeding, and others
- The temperate trees weeding segment dominates the global diuron market
- Thus, increase in demand for diuron to kill temperate trees weeding is propelling the segment
North America to Hold Leading Share of Global Diuron Market
- In terms of region, the global diuron market can be divided into North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and Middle East & Africa
- North America is expected to hold major share of the global diuron market, followed by Asia Pacific and Europe, during the forecast period
- Demand for automobiles is increasing with the growth in disposable income of middle-class families. Additionally, penetration of e-vehicles is expected to drive the demand for diuron in North America.
- Application of herbicide is not limited to the agricultural field in North America; it is also used for weed management in lawns and forests. Considering this, the market share of herbicides is expected to rise significantly in North America during the forecast period, thereby driving the diuron market in the region.

Diuron Market: Introduction
- Diuron (1,1-dimethyl, 3-(3',4'-dichlorophenyl) urea) is a broad-spectrum residual herbicide and algaecide used in agriculture for pre-emergent and post-emergent control of broadleaved and grass weeds
- It is also used to control weeds and algae in and around water bodies. It is a component of marine antifouling paints. Diuron is a colorless crystalline solid. It is used as herbicide.
- Diuron is soluble in hot alcohol with solubility of 5.3% in acetone. Diuron is slightly soluble in dioxane, ethyl acetate, ethanol, and thermal benzene, with solubility of 42 mg/L in water. It is stable in the air.
