Thermoform Packaging Market: Overview
Thermoforming is the process of subjecting a thermoplastic to heat so that it is softened and can be stretched and held in a single position until it cools down and solidifies to attain a shape and size that is required. Thermoform packaging is a technique of manufacturing strong packaging products by heating plastic in a mold such that the plastic acquires the shape of the mold in which it has been heated. There are many types of thermoform packaging. Some of the well-known products are clamshells, blister packages, shipping containers, and food trays.
A variety of thermoplastic materials can be used in this process, including the following: acrylics (PMMA), polystyrene (PS), low-density polyethylene (LDPE), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), cellulose acetate, high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polypropylene (PP), and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS).
There are three main methods for subjecting a thermoplastic sheet so that it acquires a particular conformation: vacuum forming, pressure forming, and mechanical forming. For the manufacturing of disposable or rigid packaging, thin-gauge (less than 0.060 inch) sheets are used, whereas for permanent surfaces on shower enclosures, automobiles, and electronic equipment, thick-gauge (greater than 0.120 inch) sheets are generally used.
Thermoform packing is used widely for the packing of essential commodities such as food, medicines, medical devices, chemicals, and electronic appliances.
Thermoform Packaging Market: Market Trends
With the growing trend of fast food and the sale of commodities like fruits and vegetables that need to be kept fresh until they reach customers, the utilization of thermoform has increased widely. Not only food materials, but also commodities like electronic devices, medicines, and automobile spare parts, require thermoform packaging so that the material is not damaged.
For environmental reasons, many types of thermoform packaging have fallen into disfavor among consumers – notably in the fast food sector discussed above. As a result, companies actively look for paper-based alternatives for many formed plastic items, though plastics remain widely used particularly in applications where visibility is important. Plastic clamshells are a good example: when retail products are displayed on racks or on the shelf, sales improve because shoppers are able to see the item before purchasing.
Hence, in the future, unlike the thermoplastics that are being used at present, leading to an eventual slump in the market for thermoform packaging.
Thermoform Packaging Market: Region-wise Outlook
The rapid growth of industries such as food and beverages, pharmaceuticals, and automobiles in Germany will be responsible for the development of the market for thermoform packaging in Europe. The large number of food industries in the developing economies of India and China is a factor for the spread of thermoform packaging in Asia Pacific as well.
However, North America and the Middle East and Africa may showcase slow growth in the market for thermoform packaging in the coming years.
Thermoform Packaging Market: Key Players
Some of the key players currently operating in the market of thermoform packaging are Bemis Company, Inc., Sonoco Products Company, E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company, Amcor Limited, DS Smith Plc., WestRock Company, and Display Pack Inc.
