Paraformaldehyde Market for Resins, Agrochemicals, Medical, and Other Applications - Global Industry Analysis, Size, Share, Growth, Trends and Forecast 2015 - 2023


Paraformaldehyde is a solid white polymer of aqueous formaldehyde, with a characteristic pungent smell of formaldehyde. It is a highly concentrated version of 37% formaldehyde, obtained through concentrating and dehydrating formaldehyde solution. Paraformaldehyde is generally composed of polymers with varying molecular weights. The most common concentration of paraformaldehyde ranges between 91% and 93% of formaldehyde by weight. Paraformaldehyde is marginally soluble in alcohol and cold water and easily soluble in hot water. Paraformaldehyde, once dissolved in water, exhibits characteristics of methanol-free formaldehyde of equal concentration. Less than 2% of the global formaldehyde produce is used in the manufacture paraformaldehyde.

Resins and agrochemical applications together accounted for over 80% of the global paraformaldehyde demand in 2014. The paraformaldehyde market has been driven by demand from resin and agrochemical manufacturers. Paraformaldehyde is extensively used to manufacture urea formaldehyde, melamine formaldehyde, and phenolic resins. It is also used to manufacture ion-exchange resin, glycol, trimethylolpropane, n-methylolacrylamide and pentaerythritol. Manufacturers use paraformaldehyde instead of formaldehyde when low water content is desired. Moreover, paraformaldehyde offers more favorable control of reaction rates in synthesis of resins and improved productivity. Paraformaldehyde is used in the agrochemicals industry to produce herbicides, glyphosate in particular. It is also used to manufacture other herbicides including acetochlor, butachlor, machete, and bismerthiazol. However, the market is driven by its application in glyphosate. Paraformaldehyde in medical applications is used for hygienic disinfection. Furthermore, paraformaldehyde is used for antisepsis support. Other applications of paraformaldehyde include developing photographic films, producing rubber, leather, and plastics.

The paraformaldehyde market is also plagued with concerns over the marketability of glyphosate in the long term. IARC (International Agency for Research on Cancer) has classified glyphosate under Group 2B, which renders glyphosate as a probable human carcinogen. Research suggests traces of glyphosate were found in human urine, and the most probable source of glyphosate toxicity is through agricultural produce treated with glyphosate. Several countries have imposed restrictions on the usage of glyphosate and many more are expected to follow suit. The Netherlands banned the usage of glyphosate for all crops in 2014. The Government of France also banned the sale of Monsanto’s Roundup in nurseries. The active ingredient of Roundup is glyphosate. The Government of France is likely to ban the usage of glyphosate containing herbicides for agricultural crops in the short term as well. Apart from these countries, Austria, Hungary, Greece, Germany, Peru, Luxembourg, Ireland, Japan, and Switzerland have enforced ban on certain Monsanto products. In Latin America, major countries such as Brazil and Argentina have also expressed concerns regarding the use of glyphosate on agricultural land.

Asia Pacific is the major producer and consumer of paraformaldehyde, accounting for more than 55% share of the global market in 2014. China is driving the demand for paraformaldehyde in this region. China alone accounted for approximately 80% of the demand in Asia Pacific. China is also the largest manufacturer of paraformaldehyde in the world. Asia Pacific was followed by Europe and North America. The application dynamics of the paraformaldehyde market, however, varies with region. Agrochemical production drives demand in Asia Pacific, while production of resins is the primary application of paraformaldehyde in Europe and North America.

The global paraformaldehyde market is fragmented; several companies hold the distributed market share. High idle capacity is one of the traits of the paraformaldehyde market. China boasts of the largest manufacturing capacity and operates in medium to low operating rates. Most companies manufacturing paraformaldehyde also produce formaldehyde.
