Carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRPs), Glass fiber reinforced plastics (GFRPs), foam core materials and other bio- plastic composites are used in the marine industry. Composites are used in marine applications as they provide lighter weight, higher weight-to-strength ratio and durability. Marine composites offer resistance to wear and tear, design freedom and lower labor costs in fabrication. Glass fiber reinforced plastics are the most used marine composites across various applications. 

Glass fiber reinforced plastics are used in powerboats, sailboats, cruise liners and personal watercrafts, among others. GFRPs are preferred over other composites as they are available at lower costs and offers design freedom. Foam core materials such as PVC, PET and PU are the second-largest market for marine composites and find applications in decks, masts components in powerboats and sailboats. Foam core materials were the second-largest consumed marine composites in the market. They are expected to show potential growth as they are relatively cheaper than CFRPs. CFRPs are expected to be the second-fastest growing market over the forecast period and accounted for 8.8% of the total market in 2012. The demand for CFRPs is likely to increase in near future from super yacht and other boats. Demand for other marine composites such as out-of-autoclave prepregs and metal composites are likely to emerge due to a substantially higher demand for biodegradable and repairable composites in the near future.

Demand for marine composites was highest from cruise liners; highest revenue generator in application segment in 2012. Sailboats are one of the fastest growing application segments for marine composites and accounted for 21% of the market in 2012.
