Description

Consuming fish oil supplements or eating more fish can help prevent psychosis or psychotic disorders and aid neural health. The growing awareness regarding the benefits of omega 3 fatty acids and rise in direct human consumption (DHC) are the key factors aiding the development of the global fish oil market. The demand for fish oil and fish oil supplements is exceptionally high around the world. However, countries such as Peru, Denmark, and Chile emerged as the leading producers of fish oil, contributing to over 50% of the global fish oil production.

The research report provides a holistic overview of the global fish oil market. It analyzes the elementary components shaping the development of the market and highlights the factors responsible for growth and potential restraints on the market. Using an analytical approach, the report studies the growth trajectory of the market. The study segments the global fish oil market on the basis of chief application areas, varieties of fish oil, and key regional markets.

Regionally, the global fish oil market is segmented into Europe, North America, Latin America, Asia Pacific, and Rest of the World. The chief application segments of the fish oil industry include aquaculture, direct human consumption (DHC), and others (hydrogenation and industrial). Demand is anticipated to be significantly high from the European region due to the large-scale practice of aquaculture, which accounts for nearly 75% of total fish oil demand.

Overview of the Global Fish Oil Market

The global fish oil market, which stood at US$1.1 billion in 2011, is expected to rise to US$1.7 billion by the end of 2018. If the figures hold true, the market will develop at a positive 5.5% CAGR between 2012 and 2018. In 2011, the global fish oil market sold approximately 1,035 kilo tons of fish oil. The market will register only meager growth during the forecast period, with the sales expected to rise to 1,130 kilo tons by 2018, exhibiting a slow but positive CAGR of 1.22%.

Rising awareness regarding the benefits of omega 3 fatty acids, of which fish oil is a primary source, boosts the global market for fish oil. With the increasing dietary consumption of omega 3 fatty acid worldwide, the demand for fish oil is poised to increase exponentially in the next few years. However, the static or reduced production of fish oil globally may impede the market growth to a certain extent.

The most common sources of omega 3 fatty acids include fish, flax, and algae. However, a majority of omega 3 is commercially obtained from fish oils. Omega 3 also helps prevent heart diseases by reducing harmful triglyceride levels in the body. The growing awareness regarding such health benefits offered by omega 3 fatty acids has aided in augmenting the demand for fish oil globally.

Free Market Analysis

Fish oils are primarily used in aquaculture as fish feed and account for over 75% of the fish oil demand. The aquaculture segment is dominated by salmons and trout, which consume a major share of the fish oil. In addition, direct human consumption of fish oils has been increasing over the past couple of years owing to the increased demand for omega 3 (EPA and DHA).

Peru, Chile and Denmark are the leading producers of fish oil and account for over 50% of the production. In terms of consumption, the European region is the largest consumer primarily due to the farming of salmons and trout. In addition, the growing demand for omega 3 as part of regular diet in Europe has further augmented the consumption of fish oil. However, there has been steadily growing demand for fish oil in Asia Pacific as well, especially from China due to the growing aquaculture market in the region.

Omega 3 is an essential fatty acid, and common sources include fish, algae and flax. However, commercially, majority of omega 3 is obtained from fish oils. Omega 3 helps in reducing the triglyceride levels of the body and hence helps in reducing heart related diseases. The increasing awareness regarding the benefits of omega 3 has augmented the use of fish oil in direct human consumption resulting in reduced availability of fish oil for aquaculture. The major fishes used for human consumption include anchovy, mackerel, herring and capelin due to the high content of EPA/DHA in them.

The leading producers of fish oil include EPAX AS, COPEINCA ASA, Omega Protein Coporation, Croda Inc and Colpex among others.
