Filters are porous devices which are used for purification of any gas or liquid passing through it by removing impurities from them. Filters are typically made of thin surface coated polyester films, woven and knitted fabrics, cotton, paper and other synthetic and organic membranes. Introduction and implementation of Kyoto Protocol and other similar emission norms is expected to drive the market for filters over the forecast period. In addition, these norms define emission standards for other sectors of the market such as motor vehicles, consumer goods and utilities. Growing demand of automobiles and consumer goods are expected to further fuel the growth of filters market. However, development of substitute technologies such as ion exchange, distillation and photo-oxidation which gave optimum results is expected to hamper the growth of the filters market. 

Filters can be divided into three major product types based on their function, viz., ICE filters, fluid filters and air filters. ICE filters accounted for the largest consumption of over 40% of the market share of filters in 2011. Growing demand of automobiles from emerging economies such as China and India are expected to help the growth of ICE filters. In addition, introduction and implementation of various norms such as EURO 5 and EURO 6 are expected to boost the demand of filters across all regions of the world.
