Electroactive polymers, commonly abbreviated as EAP, are specialty polymers that exhibit properties that alter shape and size upon exposure to electrical stimulation. Unlike traditional polymers, which exhibit electrically insulating properties, electroactive polymers facilitate the flow of electrons which renders them electrically conductive. Electroactive polymers have gained acceptance in various applications, particularly in the electrical & electronics industry, due to their polymeric properties such as light weight, easy moldability, sensing and actuating functions, quick response time, and easy controllability. The market for electroactive polymers is not mature; manufacturers carry out extensive R&D activities to ascertain the potential applications of electroactive polymers in different products and industries. Electroactive polymers are divided into three major segments: conductive polymers, inherently (intrinsically) conductive polymers (ICP), and inherently (intrinsically) dissipative polymers (IDP). Other types of electroactive polymers include dielectric elastomers and ferroelectrets. Conductive polymers are usually manufactured by adding conducting additives (for instance, carbon black, metal flakes, etc.) to the polymer matrix in order to render them conductive. ICP and IDP are manufactured through the doping process, which either employs oxidation or protonation techniques that render polymers intrinsically conductive without external additives. The oxidation process removes an electron from every second monomer unit, while the protonation process adds an electron to every second monomer unit. This imparts conductivity to the conjugated polymer. Conductive polymers are the most popular among all product types owing to their relatively low cost and easy availability. However, demand for ICP has increased significantly. Thus, ICP is expected to account for higher market share during the forecast period. 

Major applications of electroactive polymers include ESD & EMI protection, actuators, sensors, and antistatic packaging. Other applications include smart fabrics, solar cells, and plastic transistors. Electroactive polymers are primarily used in ESD & EMI protection. They prevent build-up of static electricity and magnetic interference, which can cause electronic hardware to malfunction. In terms of demand, ESD & EMI protection application held more than 35% share of the global electroactive polymers market in 2015. Actuators and sensors applications are also anticipated to expand during the forecast period. High demand for electroactive polymers in actuators is primarily ascribed to its increasing usage in automobile, robotics, and medical fields. Sensors include odor sensors, gas sensors, biosensors, and chemical sensors. The U.S. held the largest share of the global electroactive polymers market in 2015. The market for electroactive polymers in Europe is estimated to expand at a sluggish pace vis-à-vis that in other regions. Asia Pacific leads the production of electronics and semi-conductors across the globe; however, demand for electroactive polymers in the region is at the nascent stage.
