Crude oil extracted from offshore and onshore oil reserves contains many detrimental impurities, such as sand, salts, water, drilling mud, and polymer. Salt and water content varies depending on the source of crude oil. Crude oil desalter is used to remove salts and moisture from crude oil. Crude oil electrostatic dehydrator is used to remove water content from crude oil. Various salts such as sodium chloride, calcium chloride, and magnesium chloride are present in crude oil. Salt and water content in crude oil should be treated and removed from crude oil before processing it in a refinery. If left untreated, the salts, water, and impurities in crude oil can cause various operating and maintenance problems such as corrosion, abrasion, plugging and fouling of equipment, and poisoning of catalysts in processing units. Crude oil desalting is generally the first process to be carried out in a crude oil refinery. Crude oil dehydrating is generally carried out in the production stage of crude oil during upstream operations.

Crude oil desalter/electrostatic dehydrator is a very efficient way to minimize salts and water content from crude oil. A desalter/electrostatic dehydrator generally consists of various components such as process vessel, distribution system, electrodes, transactors, mud wash, and level control devices. 

Desalting of crude oil consists of various processes such as water dilution and injection, water dispersion in crude oil, emulsification of diluted water in crude oil, distribution of emulsion in electrostatic field, coalescence procedure and settling of water droplets. Crude oil dealers are available in different types such as single stage crude oil desalter, two stage crude oil desalter, and three stage crude oil desalter. A single stage crude oil desalter is around 90% efficient in removing salts from crude oil. A two stage crude oil desalter is around 95%-98% efficient in removing salts from crude oil, whereas a three stage crude oil desalter is more than 98% efficient in removing salts from crude oil. A single stage crude oil desalter has just one coalescer. A two stage crude oil desalter has two coalescers, while a three stage crude oil desalter has three coalescers to improve desalting efficiency. A two stage crude oil desalter or three stage crude oil desalter is preferred over single stage crude oil desalter when excess water dilution or attainment of desired salt concentration is needed.

Dehydrating of crude oil is usually done at production stage to eliminate excess water content from crude oil. This process can also be performed at refineries to remove moisture content from refined petroleum products. Crude oil electrostatic dehydrators are available in different types such as AC field electrostatic dehydrator, combined AC-DC field electrostatic dehydrator, and DC field electrostatic dehydrator. A combined AC-DC field electrostatic dehydrator is the most effective system and is suitable for all kinds of crude oil. AC field electrostatic dehydrators are the most widely used electrostatic dehydrators and perform efficiently with heavy crude oil. A DC field electrostatic dehydrator has limited applications and is mostly used downstream to dehydrate light crude oil and refined petroleum products with minimal water content.

Although type and technology of dealers/electrostatic dehydrators highly affect crude oil desalting/ dehydrating performance and efficiency, various others factors such as crude oil feed rate, crude oil quality, temperature/viscosity/density relationships, electrical field intensity, wash water rate, flow configuration, emulsion formation, pumps, valves, mixers, control of water level, control of emulsion layers, emulsifier technology and brine recycle rate influence desalter/electrostatic dehydrator operation and performance. Desalters are also used in fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) units, which convert heavy hydrocarbon portions of petroleum crude oils to more valued products such as gasoline and olefin gases to adjust the disparity between the market demand and production supply.
