Solar energy can be utilized to generate electricity in two separate ways. One is using solar concentrators and the other is photovoltaic systems. The basic approach is to convert the solar energy in the form of imminent photons to serviceable electricity. Solar concentrators are used to focus sunlight either in a solar thermal or photovoltaic system. Concentrated solar power (CSP) technology uses mirrors equipped with tracking systems to focus sunlight from large area onto a small area. This causes heat formation and this heat is further used for power generation. The entire CSP plant can be divided into three sections such as solar field, thermal energy storage and power block. Solar field consists of chains of parabolic fashioned mirrors arranged in a distributed system so that heating fluid from each dish is transferred to a central conversion station. Thermal energy storage system stores the generated heat for later use. The heating fluid is transferred to power block where is it used in the process of boiling water to generate steam for conventional steam generators to generate electricity.

The major driver for concentrated solar power market is rising awareness about the global warming. Carbon emissions from the fossil fuel generating stations are one of the major causes of green house gases in atmosphere. Governments from different countries have started taking appropriate measure for reducing the green house gases emission in the atmosphere. Alteration in the power generation process is one of the major steps taken towards to reduce the carbon footprints in the atmosphere. 

The CSP market can be segmented broadly on the basis of different types of technology used for power generation. CSP technology can be broadly segmented into Parabolic Trough, Tower, Fresnel and Dish Sterling. Among all these technologies Parabolic Trough is considered to be the most matured technology and is used widely at commercial level for power generation. After Parabolic Trough, Tower is widely used followed by Fresnel. Parabolic Trough was the most dominating technology used for power generation in 2013 and is expected to grow at a healthy CAGR during the forecasted period 2014 - 2020. Dish Sterling technology is still used for demonstration and pilot projects. CSP technology is considered to be high capital intensive in nature and without governmental and financial institutions support it cannot be deployed at commercial scale. Government incentive and rebate schemes along with low feed in tariffs are major drivers for the demand of CSP technology. Though because of economic slowdown in Europe, the market has led a slow degradation in the installation process but the market is expected to grow during the forecasted period 2014-2020. Tower technology is growing with the fastest rate because of the integration of technology with the conventional thermal power plants.

In terms of CSP installed capacity, Europe is considered as the leading producer of power from CSP technology in the world and the production is expected to grow in the forecasted period of 2012-2019. The second largest production comes from the North America followed by Asia Pacific. The market for the CSP in Asia Pacific is expected to rise with in the forecasted period.
