Other applications include cellulose insulation, tanning and as a fire retardant. Boron compounds are also used in cementation of iron, as fibers and filaments in composites with metals or ceramics, in special-purpose alloys, for nuclear reactors, as a shield for nuclear radiation and in instruments used for detecting neutrons. Boron-containing reagents are also used as intermediates in the synthesis of organic chemicals and as dopant for semiconductors.

In terms of volume, borax accounted for more than 44% of the global boron compounds market in 2013.
