Description

Bitumen is primarily used as a binder in road construction along with other applications such as electronics, waterproofing for roofing, and in adhesives due to its resistance to water, insulation properties and high durability. The properties of bitumen can be altered by adding polymers to it, thus, increasing its application scope.

The report forecasts and analyzes the bitumen market on a global and regional level. The forecast demand onthe global level is based on volume (million tons) and revenue (USD billion) for the period from 2012 to 2018. For better understanding of the market on a regional level, the market has been forecasted based on volume (kilo tons) and revenues (USD million) for the same time period. The study covers the drivers and restraints of the bitumen market and their impact on the growth of the market during this time period. In addition, the study includes opportunities available for the market on a regional and global level and its effect in the above mentioned time period.

For better understanding of the bitumen market, we have given a detailed analysis of the value chain. Moreover, a detailed Porters five forces model offers a better understanding of the intensity of competition present in the market. The study also comprises of a market attractiveness analysis, where the applications are benchmarked based on their market scope, growth rate and general attractiveness.

The bitumen market has been segmented based on its product types, application and geography. All product type segments have been analyzed and forecast based on volumes (million tons) for the time period ranging from 2012 to 2018. Bitumen is a black viscous mixture of hydrocarbons which is obtained naturally or as a residue formed by fractional distillation of crude oil. It is primarily used as a binder in roadways applications such as paving and underlay. In addition, the waterproofing properties of bitumen also augment its use in roofing and other similar applications. The development of infrastructure in emerging economies such as China and India is a key factor responsible for the growing demand for bitumen. Furthermore, the growing application scope of Polymer Modified Bitumen (PMB), which has superior properties as compared to paving and industrial grade bitumen, is expected to further boost the growth of the market over the forecast period. However, being a petroleum derived product, bitumen has a variety of environmental restrictions which could hamper the demand for bitumen over the forecast period.

Paving grade bitumen, which is used in roadway application as a binder for asphalt, was the largest consumed product type in the bitumen market. Paving grade bitumen accounted for over 70% of the consumption of bitumen across all applications in 2011. Oxidized bitumen was the next largest product segment accounting for roughly 9% of the total consumption owing to its extensive use in roofing and other waterproofing applications. PMB is the fastest growing product of bitumen due to its advanced functionality as compared to the other grades of bitumen.

Roadway applications were the largest consumer of bitumen and consumed over 80% of the bitumen produced globally in 2011. This application is expected to gain market share over the forecast period owing to the rapid development of countries such as India, China, Russia and Brazil. Roofing was the second largest application segment for bitumen and accounted for over 10% of the global consumption in 2011. Bitumen is also used in a variety of applications such as insulation, adhesive, decorative and industrial.

Owing to the massive roads network of the U.S., North America was the largest consumer of bitumen in 2011 and accounted for over 30% of the global consumption in 2011. The primary consumption in this region comes from redevelopment and repair of existent roads in contrast to the emerging economies where the consumption is driven by development of new infrastructure. Europe followed North America in terms of volumes of bitumen consumed and accounted for over 25% of the global consumption in 2011. Germany and France were the primary consumers of bitumen in Europe together accounting for over 30% of the European consumption. China is expected to register the fastest growth among all regions owing to the significant government stimulus offered for development of infrastructure in the region. In the Asia Pacific region, India is expected to be the primary consumer of bitumen due to the expected development of road networks in the country under the 11th Five year plan.

The bitumen market is fragmented in nature with the top 10 companies accounting for little over 40% of the market share in 2011. Shell Bitumen was the largest manufacturer of bitumen in 2011 and accounted for over 6% of the market share by volume. The company has been proactive in the bitumen market and launched a variety of products in 2011 such as flame retardant bitumen and low temperature bitumen. Nustar Energy and ExxonMobil were the next largest companies in the bitumen market accounting for over 10% of the market share together in 2011. Both these companies have fully integrated operations from extraction of crude oil and refining it to in order to produce bitumen. The other major players in the bitumen market include Marathon Oil Corporation, Valero energy Corporation and Nynas AB among others.
