Amorphous polyalphaolefin (APAO), also known as on-purpose APAO, is an olefin-based thermoplastic polymer that is widely used in the formulation of hot melt adhesives. APAO is emerging as a novel class of hot melt adhesives (HMA) over ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) or styrene-butadiene copolymers (SBC). APAO forms the base polymer of adhesives formulation. Hence, it is the key ingredient in hot melt adhesives. APAO was obtained as a by-product of synthesis of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) until the mid-19th century. However, after the invention of Ziegler-Natta (Z-N) catalyst, APAO production started taking place through polymerization of propylene and ethylene in the presence of Z-N catalyst.

 

Demand for APAO for hot melt is primarily driven by robust growth of hot melt adhesives in the packaging and converting industry, proliferation of personal hygiene products, and rising demand for lightweight and low-emission automotive vehicles. APAO-based hot melt has a characteristic property of bonding with almost any substrate including delicate papers, complex plastics, foam, metals, wood, corrugated containers, particle board, etc. Thus, growth of the APAO for hot melt market is anticipated to be high in various applications during the forecast period.
