Phablets and Superphones will Constitute Market Worth US$116.4 bn by 2018

The growing appeal of larger phone screen sizes among consumers will be a defining trend in the global phablets and superphones market. According to a new report published by Transparency Market Research, phablets and superphones will constitute a market worth US$116.4 bn by 2018, and will have a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 44.1% in terms of revenue. The report, titled ‘Phablets and Superphones Market - Global Industry Analysis, Size, Share, Growth and Forecast, 2012 - 2018,’ also states that in terms of volume sales, the market will register a 25.8% CAGR through the forecast horizon. The report notes that phablets and superphones present a decidedly superior value proposition for consumers who cannot afford both a smartphone and a tablet. This factor will augur well for the growth of the global phablets and superphones market.

Price is a decisive factor for virtually every consumer electronic product these days, and superphones and phablets are no exception. With manufacturers having achieved economies of scale for superphones and phablets, the price point of these products has slid down to record levels. Naturally, this will lead to an uptick in sales of both these devices. However, many models still feature AMOLED displays, which prevent phablets and superphones from being priced even lower. Yet another factor that stands in the way of the market’s growth is the complex operability of these devices.

The report also notes that superphones held about 88% of the global phablets and superphones market. However, sales of phablets are catching up, which could cause the current share of superphones to shrink over the next few years. However, this will only be a marginal rise, and not enough to threaten the current dominant position of superphones. TMR analysts expect that by 2018, superphones would still constitute about 70% (volume terms) of the combined market for phablets and superphones.

For the purpose of this study, the phablets market is segmented on the basis of product type into: Windows, Android, and BlackBerry. Using the same criteria, the superphones market is also segmented in to the three aforementioned operating systems. Android superphones and phablets currently hold a dominant position in the global market. While Android phablets constitute 82% of the global phablets market, Android superphones make up 87% of the superphones market.

According to the TMR report, over 150 mn Android-based superphones were shipped in 2012, and this number will spiral to 400 mn units by 2018. Global shipments of Android-based phablets stood at a meager 21 mn in 2012, but will show a noticeable rise to reach 150 mn by 2018.Furthermore, the report studies the following regional markets for phablets and superphones: Asia Pacific, North America, Europe, and Rest of the World. Although North America stood as the single-largest market for superphones and phablets (by sales volume), it will be displaced from its leading position by the Asia Pacific phablets and superphones market by the end of 2015.Companies profiled in the report are: HTC Corporation, Samsung Electronics, LG Display, Micromax, Sony Corporation, Dell, Huawei, ASUS, Motorola, and ZTE.
